Wanda Koop, one of Canada’s most distinguished contemporary artists, has an insatiable desire to create that’s both admirable and impressive. Koop’s career includes over 50 solo exhibitions, with paintings, drawings, installations, and video’s that span four decades (and counting…). Very few Canadian painters have produced such a massive, varied body of work while sustaining such consistent quality. In her “VIEW from HERE” (2009) collection, Koop takes on abstraction in a series of hybrid paintings that use abstract spaces as landscape settings for small human-silhouette figures. I love the juxtaposition between nature, man, and perspective, and the subsequent sense of disconnection and absurdity that I feel when I look at these. As my human head faces her drawing of a human head, I gather a perspective of another perspective that begs me to question what ’perspective’ is, in general…gush.
